Carshalton - A London Suburb

Situated in the Borough of Sutton, Carshalton lies on the River Wandle with Carshalton Ponds, a tributary of the river, at the village centre. Carshalton lies on the outskirts of the city of London within the M25 motorway to the south of Wandsworth.Although Carshalton was originally a village it is now caught up within the sprawling city of London. However it still retains its village atmosphere with many different areas. The main areas are Carshalton-on-the-hill, central Carshalton, Wrythe Green and Carshalton Beeches.The Domesday Book records Carshalton as the village of Aultone, owned by Goisfrid de Mandeville, with the Anglo Saxon name roughly translated as "an enclosed farm with a spring on it."Since Norman times there has been a church in Carshalton. Nowadays it is called All Saints Church and is home to some superb 12th Century architecture along with modern day building work. In 1891 an Apple iPad Accessories extension was added to include the present day north aisle and nave. A spring outside of the churchyard is called by locals Anne Boleyns well, although the exact origins of the name are not known it is thought to come from either the fact that the Boulogne family were the Wholesale Car Door Guards landowners during the 12th century or from a story of how Anne Boleyn's horse was said to have accidently discovered the well when she was out riding in the area.During the latter half of the 1600's Josias Dewye built Strawberry Lodge as a residence in the countryside and an escape from London. The building is today used as Carshalton Baptist Church and has seen extensive renovation since the 1990s.One of the most famous sights in Carshalton is the Carshalton House Water Tower. Constructed during the early 18th century the tower provided Carshalton House with running water as well as a supply to maintain the lavish gardens. Along with the water pump the tower also housed a bathroom, saloon and orangery. Other notable residences within the village include, the Orangery (in Carshalton Park), Honeywood (now a museum) and Little Holland House (Frank Dickinson a famous artist lived here.)With 5 schools Carshalton is an excellent location for young families to live. The village boasts many open spaces including the 3 parks, Grove Park, Carshalton Park and Oaks Park, which houses the Oaks bake house, a fire destroyed the original mansion leaving only the bread oven from the bake house. When you add to this the excellent transport links, 2 railway stations, a tube station 20 minutes away and several bus routes through the village, Carshalton is great for those families who wish to escape from London to the countryside but still be within quick and Valve Stem Caps easy access of the capital.With 2 local swimming pools and 2 football clubs those wishing to be active in their spare time are well catered for in Carshalton. For those who wish to be social Carshalton holds many annual events for the local community. These events include a summer carnival, Guy Fawkes firework display, a beer festival and many shows and productions in the village theatre, performed by the local community dramatics groups.
